How To Stop Procrastinating? Well…
Barbara Oakley’s book A Mind For Numbers says: “We procrastinate about things that make us feel uncomfortable. Medical imaging studies have shown that mathphobes, for example, appear to avoid math because even just thinking about it seems to hurt. The pain centers of their brains light up when they contemplate working on math.”
Ever felt the pain of procrastination? Or just like you just weren’t getting things done?
Trust me I will be the first to confess that I have a full understanding of what it’s like to struggle with procrastinating. For example,
As a mom I find my self daydreaming sometimes instead of getting things done. This happens when I am super tired or my list of to-do things have piled up. Sometimes you can have the best intentions and desire to get things done, but still, struggle to carry out your plans.
The bad habit of procrastination hits us all at one point or another. Let me assure you once again that you are far from alone…
For me, I tend to procrastinate following two reasons in particular maybe you can relate…
there are two reasons why I get stuck most oftentimes in the rut of procrastination.
- I haven’t figure out the strategy or structure that I need to get things done.
- The things that I should be completed I have no full interest in doing.
Can you relate to this?
I recently learned from my business coach that my bad habit of procrastination that seems to creep up on me every now and again is connected to my style of learning new things. Sometimes we tend to feel a mind block when we are struggling with a bad procrastination habit or we simply are processing to learning a new skill.
Jen Wilkin the author of the “When we best learn the Bible” states, “Contrary to our gut reaction, feeling lost or confused is not a bad sign for a student. It is actually a sign that our understanding is being challenged and that learning is about to take place. Embracing the dissonance of feeling lost, rather than avoiding it (giving up) or dulling it (looking for a shortcut), will actually place us in the best possible position to learn.”
This definitely proves that some of your procrastinating stalls need to be embraced instead of pushed to the side.
Here are a few ‘Mindset Hacks’ that can get you moving past the procrastination zone swiftly.
- The key is to make up in your mind to get moving.
- Think positive and you will get positive results.
- Just Do it! Don’t wait to think about the process of getting things done…More than likely you will never get started!
Remember it’s ultimately a “mind over matter” strategy when it comes to overcoming the habit of procrastination.
Before you get started at trying to put a new normal into place be sure to realize that mindset shifts that are essentially connected to habit change strategies do take time to shift. Be sure not to get discouraged if you don’t meet your goals in the first few tries.
Staying persistent is the key.
